Sailing Team

Richard Fryer

Richard is a director of SYS. He is 32 and was born in South Africa. Richard is the skipper of the current SYS yacht Bols and is the leader of the Sailing Team as well as a watch captain for racing and record attempts. Richard has been part of the Racing Team since 1998. Richard was a watch leader on Bols Sport when it won its class in the Sydney-Hobart Yacht race. Richard also looks after all client guests. He was the project manager for the construction of the most recent SYS yacht, Bols. Richard is a yacht rigger and computer engineer.

Ben Costello

Sail coordinator. Ben, 25, is a New Zealander and has always worked in the sailing industry. He was responsible for the construction of the sails at Doyle New Zealand and has raced maxi yachts for several years including completing in prestigious races such as the Sydney-Hobart Race. Ben is in charge of all sails for SYS projects including their branding. Ben is a graduate of the prestigious Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron youth scheme.

Andrew Meiklejohn

Andy, 28, is a New Zealander and is the Mast co-ordinator. Andy is in charge of all the masts, rigging and spar development for SYS. He previously worked for Southern Spars NZ, the world’s leading mast manufacturer where he was responsible for the construction of the mast for Bols, the current SYS yacht. He has sailed on maxi yachts, maxi cats and trimarans at the leading edge of the industry for the past decade. He is the bowman on Bols and lives in England.

Dean Kennedy

Dean 27, is a New Zealander and is a boat builder by trade. He is in charge of all hardware and structures on Bols. He is a trimmer for racing operations. He was also involved with the beautiful J-class yacht Shamrock V. Like Ben he is a graduate of the prestigious Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron youth scheme.

Cam Marshall

Cam is the youngest member of the SYS sailing team. At 20 Cam is in his first year with SYS. He was runner up in the national championship of New Zealand in the P class, previous winners include great New Zealand sailors Russell Coutts and Chris Dickson. Cam comes from a strong sporting family. His cousin Hamish Marshall is in the New Zealand cricket team.

Joyce Monroe

Joyce is the shore manager for the SYS Sailing Team. Joyce is the SYS website manager and liaises with SYS NZ in relation to branding and financial affairs of SYS. She manages all shore based arrangements for SYS yachts and the Sailing Team and co-ordinates the shore activities with the client as well as managing her team of shore personnel.
